Anthropic cuts Fable's price, and Qwen undercuts it by lunch

Price, not intelligence, was the battleground today, and it played out in public over the course of a single morning. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 with a cache read cut that takes roughly a quarter off a typical bill, Perplexity published third party numbers showing it delivers more quality per dollar, and within hours Qwen posted a 2.4 trillion parameter model at a fifth of Anthropic's per token rate. Around that fight, the day's other launches all sold efficiency rather than raw capability: Google gave Gemini a way to cut video analysis tokens by up to 88 per cent for free, Meta shipped a genuinely strong streaming transcription model, and Perplexity found a way to hand sensitive steps to a local model mid-task. Running underneath everything, three separate labs published safety disclosures in the same day, which is starting to look like a release artefact in its own right.

Anthropic

Claude Fable 5.1 arrives with a 25 per cent cost cut and strong science results

If you are already paying for Fable by the token, this is the rare release where the headline is the invoice rather than the benchmark. Anthropic has cut cache read pricing by 75 per cent, which works out at roughly 25 per cent off a typical workload and up to 45 per cent off heavily agentic ones, while input and output pricing stays at 10 and 50 dollars per million tokens. Fable 5.1 is available today across the Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure as claude-fable-5-1, and it defaults to High effort in Claude Code and Medium in Claude Cowork and on Claude.ai, so check which tier your tooling is quietly picking for you.

The cybersecurity safeguards have also been loosened in a way that matters day to day: Claude Code users should see around 60 per cent fewer safeguard interruptions per session, and the model can now be used to find software vulnerabilities, though not to build exploits for them. Alongside it sits Claude Mythos 5.1, the same model with more permissive safeguards, restricted to vetted cyberdefenders and life sciences professionals through two verification programmes. The science results are worth reading twice, including protein binders with roughly a 50 per cent hit rate and a new elevation map of a third of Venus built from thirty year old Magellan radar data.

Qwen3.8-Max-0902 lands at a fraction of frontier pricing

This one broke on Qwen's own X account within the hour and had no mainstream coverage at the time of writing, which is exactly the sort of thing the social scan exists to catch. Qwen3.8-Max-0902 is an upgrade to the existing Max line rather than a new architecture, further post trained on coding and agentic work, and Qwen is claiming stronger performance on complex enterprise tasks, scientific research and long horizon workflows.

The number that will get attention is the price: 2 dollars per million input tokens and 6 dollars per million output tokens, with cache hits at 0.17 and 0.25 dollars. Set that against the 10 and 50 dollars Anthropic charges for Fable 5.1 announced the same day and you have a very direct pricing challenge at the top of the market. It extends the cheap-open-weights pressure Qwen has been applying all week, and it is live now through the API on QwenCloud, so if you run cost sensitive agentic pipelines it is worth benchmarking against whatever you are using this week rather than next quarter.

Meta

Muse Voice Transcribe tops the streaming speech leaderboards

Transcription has been a solved-enough problem for a while, so the interesting part here is what Meta has bolted on around it. Muse Voice Transcribe, Meta Superintelligence Labs' first real-time audio model, does streaming speech to text with speaker diarisation for more than twenty speakers, endpointing, and code switching mid sentence across seventy plus trained languages, twenty five of which Meta says it has verified extensively. It handles conversations running over an hour, which is the failure point for most existing pipelines, and it ranks first on Artificial Analysis streaming speech to text and on public diarisation benchmarks.

Practically, it is live now on the Meta Model API with a zero data retention tier, and it powers dictation in Meta AI for Mac and in Muse Code. If you build anything that touches meetings, calls, interviews or accessibility, this is a genuine option rather than a research preview.

Perplexity

Hybrid compute hands sensitive steps to a local model without restarting

The privacy objection to agentic tools has always been the same one: you do not want a cloud model reading your files. Perplexity's answer is to run a task in the cloud on a frontier model such as Opus 5 or GPT-5.6 Sol, then drop down to a model running on your own Mac for the steps that touch private data, keeping context intact through the handover. It is live today for Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later, needing 24GB of unified memory as a floor and 32GB recommended.

Local options at launch include Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B and a Perplexity post trained Qwen variant, and tasks started on an iPhone or iPad can route their sensitive steps to your Mac provided it is awake and running Perplexity. It is the natural next step from the company's local-first Portable Computer: whether the local models are good enough for the sensitive steps is the open question, but the orchestration pattern is the one everyone else will copy.

Perplexity had Claude Fable 5.1 live in Perplexity Computer within hours of Anthropic's announcement. On its own August WANDR evaluation, Fable 5.1 scored 0.601 at 12.76 dollars per task, which it puts at 21 per cent higher quality and 37 per cent lower cost than Fable 5, a third party figure that lines up with Anthropic's own pricing claims. ChatGPT for Healthcare can now read authorised Epic records

This is OpenAI pushing ChatGPT into the systems where regulated work actually happens, which is a harder sell than consumer features and a far stickier one. The new Epic integration brings authorised patient context into ChatGPT so clinicians can ask what has changed since a patient's last visit, and in supported deployments ChatGPT can be embedded directly into the EHR layout. Alongside it, a Healthcare Public Data plugin gives structured access to nine official sources including ClinicalTrials.gov, PubMed, DailyMed, RxNorm and CMS Coverage, so teams can compare trial eligibility or confirm a drug label without hopping between sites.

OpenAI says physicians rated 99.1 per cent of responses safe across 4,363 ratings covering 27 clinical use cases. It is available to ChatGPT for Healthcare customers via an admin toggle, with eligible individual clinicians able to install the public data plugin but not the EHR integration.

OpenAI published its safeguards assessment for Astra, the first model it has designated as meeting the Critical cybersecurity threshold under its Preparedness Framework. Release is described as soon rather than dated, with advanced cyber capabilities limited to a small group of alpha testers first and wider defensive access following through Daybreak Blue. OpenAI warns the safeguards will interrupt legitimate long running agent tasks more often than it eventually intends. OpenAI, 1 Sep.
Google DeepMind

Agentic video understanding cuts video tokens by up to 88 per cent

Anyone who has tried to run a ninety minute recording through a multimodal model knows the trade off: sample every frame and pay for it, or sample sparsely and lose the thing you were looking for. Gemini now handles that decision itself, using native video tools to choose what to watch, at what speed, and through which modality, fetching only the moments it needs. Google reports up to 88 per cent lower token consumption, up to 66 per cent lower cost and up to 7 per cent better accuracy across standard benchmarks, with the gains most pronounced on long form content.

It is live today for uploads and YouTube videos through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, across Gemini 3.7 Flash, 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite, and it is a one line change: set processing to agentic in your API config. There is no additional feature fee, so for most video workloads this is close to free money. It rolls out to the Gemini app soon and will power YouTube's Ask YouTube in the coming months.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA and CrowdStrike detail an adaptive agentic security loop on Nemotron

The pitch is a closed loop rather than a single model: an offensive agent hunts for a viable attack path, a defensive agent turns the resulting telemetry into detection rules, and the rules are then tested against fresh attacks. It runs on CrowdStrike's SafeMind system, built with NVIDIA Nemotron and operating natively inside the Falcon platform, and CrowdStrike claims its defensive model is 13 per cent more accurate than the leading proprietary frontier model it tested against at 97 per cent lower cost.

For most readers this is not something you will deploy, but it is a useful signal about where open weight Nemotron style models are being pointed. Specialised, cheap and domain trained is beating general and expensive in a growing number of narrow tasks, and security is the clearest example so far.

Industry themes

The clearest pattern today is price competition at the frontier, and it is happening in public. Anthropic cut effective Fable costs by roughly a quarter through cache read pricing, Perplexity published third party evidence that Fable 5.1 delivers more quality per dollar, and within hours Qwen posted a 2.4 trillion parameter model at a fifth of Anthropic's per token rate. If you have been treating model choice as a settled decision, this is the week to re-run your numbers.

The second pattern is efficiency as the feature rather than raw capability. Google's agentic video understanding is a free 88 per cent token reduction, Meta's transcription model is competing on latency and diarisation rather than benchmark scores, and NVIDIA and CrowdStrike are arguing that a small domain trained model beats a frontier one at 97 per cent less cost. Vendors have stopped selling bigger and started selling cheaper per unit of useful work.

Third, safety disclosure has become a release artefact in its own right. OpenAI published a full safeguards assessment for Astra before the model ships, Anthropic shipped Mythos 5.1 behind government partnered access programmes, and xAI amplified an external biosecurity evaluation of Grok 4.6, all inside the same day. Two of today's biggest stories, Qwen3.8-Max-0902 and Muse Voice Transcribe, surfaced on the companies' own X accounts before mainstream coverage existed, a reminder that the press cycle now lags the announcement by hours rather than minutes.
